Managing Mental Energy

Stress is one of the biggest contributors to the dozens and dozens of health problems the world sees today. Unfortunately, most people think they should work, work, work in order to get ahead. They take pride in the fact that they have no time for themselves, and very often no time for their families.

However, being constantly busy shouldn’t be one of your goals. It’s not going to help you achieve your perfect life any quicker because your health and happiness will be shot by the time you reach financial independence. You’ll then have to spend all of your time learning how to unwind and relax your mind and body, which is harder than it sounds.

I know I talk about making sure you stay focused on your work and not getting lazy, but there is a fine line between being lazy and learning to relax. My advice is to simply work until you can notice your skills are slowly wearing thin. Then you can take a break and do whatever you’d like that you love to do until you’re refreshed enough to start working again.

I’m a big offender of working a little too hard. For instance I’m writing this a half-hour before I’m leaving to work a 12 hour shift. I’m only writing it now because I had a goal to get a post written today and I hate not sticking to my goals.

However, I still manage to find time to go out and have fun. My girlfriend and I go out every single Friday but we also spend a little more “us” time throughout the week once or twice. We might be going to the Philadelphia Zoo a week today, so that will be my break for the week (I love animals!).

The key to unlocking the fast track to your perfect life is that you create a balance in your life. Most people think of “burnout” as physical stress. In all reality its your mind that is getting too tired of running full speed all the time. Your body only plays a minimal role in burnout.

Over at genius types, Brian Lee has written a review about the book ” The Power of Full Engagement “.

He bought the book hoping to help him learn more about self-determinism, but was astounded when he realized how much it helped him balance out his life and manage his energy like professional athletes can somehow learn how to do.

I suggest at the very least you check out his review, and spend a little time at his website. His is one of the few websites I have a subscription and I’d recommend subscribing to his website as well as mine. If you haven’t subscribed to mine yet – shame on you! :-P

Tomorrow I’m going to try and add a “contact me” page so you can give me some feedback on my posts (positive or negative – everything helps) or ask me any questions you might have.

Today’s Sunday, it’s meant to be a day of relaxation. Make it your day that you get to relax your mind and body and just have a little fun!

Your perfect life awaits,

Jeremy

PS – I’d love to know what you do to unwind after a stressful day, or simply what you do to balance your life. Write a comment and let me know, it will benefit everyone!

Don’t Be “One Of Those People”

Now that the beautiful weather is around I’m starting to see more and more people at the high school local track where I run my bleachers.

When I’m coming back down the bleachers, I like to look out at the track and see what people are up to – hoping to find someone doing some high intensity training like I am (which is a very rare occurrence).

Mostly it consists of the same thing over and over. About 1/5 jog, 2/5 walk normally and maybe a little faster than usual, and about 1/5 actually power walk like a walker should be doing.

What bugs me the most is the other 1/5 that make up the average person on the track. These are the people who actually talk on their cell-phone while they are walking!

Yes it’s great that they’re at least trying to get some exercise in and not sitting on the couch all night, but come on!

I should add that these are usually the people who also walk at a snails pace. I could literally walk faster than some of the people on the track if I was hopping on 1 foot carrying a 100 pound backpack!

When you exercise, you should think of it as a great way to enhance your mind/body connection. Exercising outside helps you gain this connection even faster.

There should be no cell-phones, no beepers, no i-pods. Just you. When you bring those other accessories along with you, it severely distracts you from the goal you’re trying to reach. You can’t think about shedding the fat off your body or building muscle when you have music blaring in your ears, or worse yet, a friend on the line.

Most people listen to music to get “pumped up” but in reality studies have proven that being relaxed helps you run faster, have more endurance, and lift heavier weights.

Having an i-pod might be worthwhile in the beginning so you can take your mind off the pain in your lungs and legs, but I’d suggest that as you build your mind/body connection, you start phasing the music out and make the positive images and thoughts in your head your new “music”.

Each time you hear and feel the air screaming down into your lungs, think of the fact that all that oxygen is burning fat from your body and making you leaner with every single breath you take. How is that for a great motivator to keep going?

If you are someone who does anything I’ve just mentioned (I’m guessing most people listen to music), I beg you to leave everything in your car the next time you go to workout. Then you can come back here and tell me how much greater and fulfilling your workout became as a result of focusing on your goal instead of distracting your mind.

Your perfect life awaits,

Jeremy

Hill Sprints To Start Off Spring

Spring is finally here!

After months and months of cold weather, blizzards,  and almost getting in a head on collision due to the snow, the snow is finally gone!

I love this time of year. You wake up to a sun-filled room (if you sleep with your curtains open – which you should), hear the birds chirping, and the air is more crisp and fresh than during the winter months.

Do you know what the best part about spring is though? Being able to exercise outside and do hill sprints!

I just did my first hill sprinting workout of the year today, and I have to say it felt great. I decided to take my dog Rocky for a walk to loosen up my legs and get them ready. I also jogged slowly for a bit during the walk to further loosen them.

After the walk I grabbed a jug of water, carried it up to the road where there is a very steep, long hill, and had at it. It felt great to be outside.

After only about 7-8 minutes of exercising, I was done for the day. That’s about all it takes when you do high intensity training like I do. Talk about short and sweet. I was going to add more training into the day, such as boxing, but I wasn’t feeling right so I decided that was good enough for the day.

My muscles weren’t used to doing hill sprints so I had to cut it short. In the winter I’ve been doing stair sprints and stationary bicycle sprints, but it’s just not the same thing.

Granted, as the nice weather continues and I continue to hill sprint, I’ll get used to it and spend a little more time doing it, but it’s still always under 15 minutes or so for a full workout on my cardio days. Beats walking on a treadmill for an hour being bored out of your mind huh?

I’ll be talking in much more detail about the amazing benefit of doing hill sprints (or any type of high intensity training for that matter) so stay tuned.

Your perfect life awaits you,

Jeremy
