Why Goal Setting Will Improve Your Life

One of the long held secrets of the most successful people in the world is their ability to write down goals and stick to them everyday.

In a study done at Harvard, they followed a graduating class for 30 years and split them into groups of those who wrote down goals, and those who didn’t. At the end of the 30 years they found an astonishing fact.

Only about 2% of those students wrote down and kept goals, and those 2% made the most money out of anybody in the graduating class!

So Why Do Goals Work?

In my experience with using goals, I believe they work simply because they keep you focused on your ultimate goal. It gives you a drive to accomplish them and therefore you waste hardly any time at all until you complete them all. Every once in awhile I forget to write down my goals for the day. At the end of the day when I reflect upon it, I realize how much less I get accomplished on those days. The first time I realized this I was quite literally amazed.

Your mind wants to stay busy, grow, and create new neurotic pathways. That’s the reason why one of the main causes of Alzheimer’s disease is the fact that older folks become less active and do more things like watching TV. When your brain isn’t active, it deteriorates.

However, we have been socially brought up to think that you “need” to relax for the night after a day of work and that you shouldn’t overwork yourself. While relaxing is a very important part of my life, as should be yours, there is a fine line between relaxing and being lazy.

There is also a very big difference in the way you relax. Watching TV is not a good way to relax believe it or not, and will not help you calm down as much as you think. On the other hand if you spend your relaxation time doing something like meditating, then I can’t argue with you because meditating greatly enhances your brain’s capabilities and power.

Since we’ve been socially conditioned to be lazy, any free time that we have usually goes to things such as TV. But what would happen if your mind was focused on achieving something such as a daily goal?

You don’t have to make a big list. All I ask is that you make a goal, each and everyday, that is ultimately helping you achieve your perfect life. It can be something as small as learning about a new income stream for a few minutes, or something as big as starting to developing a website to make passive income.

It’s been proven that when you achieve a goal, no matter how big or small, a rush of endorphins are sent through your brain. Endorphins are a natural “drug” for your brain which induce happiness, lower blood pressure, reduce pain, and many other benefits. The endorphin rush actually comes to you when you realize that you’ve accomplished the goal in your mind. I like to do this by literally crossing off the goal I’ve just completed. Take a second or two to acknowledge that you’re now one step closer to your long term goal.

Here are some of my goals for today:

  1. Write a blog post for www.theroadtoperfection.com
  2. Write a page for www.crazyfortea.com
  3. Read a chapter of Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle
  4. Read 20 pages of “Exploring The World Of Lucid Dreaming”
  5. Workout
  6. Write a paper for my communication skills class
  7. Remove the kitchen island and flooring from my kitchen
  8. Visualize/meditate on my goals

As you can see I have a lot to do today, but it’s achievable. If I have any time after all these are completed, I will sit down and watch an episode of Friends or talk with my parents. However I usually only watch 1 episode (I have all 10 seasons on DVD) and then get back to work.

I personally go to school full time, work 3 days per week, write blogs almost everyday now on this website, run my other website www.crazyfortea.com, workout 5 days per week (even with tendonitis in both my elbows – no excuses), and right now my dad and I are gutting out and remodeling our entire kitchen. I’m also in the process of making contacts and learning more about real estate, which is going to be another income stream for me once summer comes. Therefore it’s important for me to make daily goals so I stay focused on what needs to be accomplished.
People say I’m crazy for not spending much time to relax and watch TV, but I think just the opposite. One of my many long term goals is being able to provide for my future family and give them whatever they need, so I’m not worried about what I’m missing out on now.

One of my short term goals is to be financially free by the end of this year. Right now I’m 40.5% of the way to my goal.

However once I reach that point I won’t get comfortable. When I graduate next May I’m going to have the option of moving out of my parents house and living on my own. If I do that, my monthly expenses are going to probably triple, so my passive income each month will need to be in lockstep with that so I can stay financially free.

Therefore, once I hit my goal of becoming financially free, I will then add another $500/month or so and reach to hit that goal. Then rinse and repeat.

I’d like to note that I have many other goals besides financial goals. It just happens to be the easiest to explain my financial goals because they’re easily measurable and most people can relate to them.

Now, compare what I’m doing in my life to what most other people do. I’m continually focusing on my goals, re-writing them to make them bigger, and therefore achieving great success for a person my age. I’m getting more passive income than probably at least 50% of adults, and I’m only 21! I’m not trying to brag in the least bit as I don’t need that to satisfy my ego, but I’m trying to make a truthful and scary point.

On the other hand, people who don’t write goals are wondering about aimlessly throughout their lives, waiting for “the perfect opportunity” to come along. Before they realize it they’re at the age of retirement with hardly any savings and relying on an extremely unstable social security system to give them money for the rest of their lives.

So are you willing to set daily goals for yourself in order to achieve what you ultimately want? I believe setting daily goals is one of the most important parts of achieving your perfect life because it makes you focus on achieving that life, without wasting any of your time each day. Try it out for a week and let me know how much more you accomplish each day. Your productivity will shoot through the roof.

Your perfect life awaits you,

Jeremy

The Most Confusing Table I’ve Ever Waited On

Last night I had work at the seafood restaurant I work at, and my first table started off the day pretty bad. Here’s the story:

A couple came in, probably in the late 50′s. I went over to them as I usually do, very energetic and in a great mood. I got their drink order and brought it down to them. As I gave the lady her drink I said “there ya go” and she responded by saying “same to you”.

I was a little perplexed by this because I had no idea what that meant, so I went about my business and got their dinner order. As usual I said thanks as I was taking the menus from their table and she responded with “same to you – bye” again.

“Ok” I thought, maybe she’s from a different culture or a different part of the country or something and that’s how they respond to certain things. I should mention now that when she said that I didn’t respond to it because I wasn’t exactly sure what I was supposed to say, so I just let it go.

I went to the kitchen to make their salad, and when I dropped it off she again said “same to you” after I said “there you go”. She then said in a very low voice, without looking at me, “I can’t believe how rude of a server you are, but I guess there’s a first time for everything.”

Shocked, I stood there and looked at her for a second, not knowing what to say. At first I thought she was joking with me like a lot of my tables do because I make them feel comfortable. However she didn’t have even a slight hint of a smile on her face, so I just walked away confused.

I thought that would be the smart thing to do because the customer is always right and if I said anything back to her I didn’t want to start any kind of conflict. She didn’t seem like the type of person that would actually be nice and explain to me what I was doing wrong.

It really shocked me when she said this because it was the first time anybody has ever called me rude – in my life. In my daily life, especially when I’m at work, I’m as polite as can be and I constantly get comments such as “I’m the best server they’ve ever had”, “I’m a fine gentleman and extraordinary server”, and frequently get tips that are above 20%.

She even went on to tell one of the bus boys that I must be the worst server in the restaurant. For the rest of the time they were there I decided to talk directly to the guy who was with her and pay no attention to her at all, in order to avoid any conflict.

There are some interesting things to learn from this situation I had with my table.

  1. I didn’t let her comments get to me and affect my ability to wait on any of my other tables. I knew that I did nothing wrong, so I just let it pass. This is an important skill to have, especially when you’re in a field in which you deal with a number of people throughout the day.
  2. I’m still not sure what I did to make her mad. The only reason I could come up with is that I did something that offended her culture. She had an accent so I figured she was from another country. Maybe I was supposed to respond by saying something after she said “same to you”?
  3. This event actually made me a little stronger and more knowledgeable in a way. If something ever comes up like that again, I’ll be sure to ask them why I was being rude and see what I can do to approach them in a better way.

This example can benefit anybody who’s in the people business, or even if you’re not. By taking this example and putting it into any context in your life you will be better able to understand if someone is mad at you, which can strengthen the relationship between you and that person.

Knowing what makes a person “tick” as they say can have tremendous benefits in your life. You will be able to understand what they’re thinking, get messages across better, enhance trust, and improve the quality of your relationship.

If I had asked her what I was doing wrong, I think it would have improved our brief relationship with each other and probably increase my tip that I got.

So what are you opinions on this? Should I have asked her what I did wrong and strengthened our relationship? Or should I have kept my mouth shut like I did and avoid the conflict?

I’d love to hear your opinions so please leave a comment and let me know what you would have done. Also make sure you remember this story the next time you’re confronted with a similar situation.

Surf The Web – Earn Passive Income

How many hours each day do you spend on the Internet? Between doing projects for work, looking up information, reading the best blog ever (mine of course), and various other things, you’re probably on the Internet a few hours per day.

I personally spend probably around 5-8 hours on the web in any given day because I’m either doing research for school, writing a new page for www.crazyfortea.com, writing a new blog for this website, or just trying to learn something new.

So, how would you like to actually get paid for something you do everyday of your life?

Agloco is actually a revised company that was around a few years ago called AllAdvantage, which had roughly the same concept but with a few different things.

They paid out over $100,000,000 to their members!

This time around however they’d made some tweaks to the company which allows it to be much more fraud and spam free, and which allows you to make more money. All good things of course.

You can actually make money through 4 different areas using Agloco:

  1. Simply Browsing: Just by simply browsing the web, doing what you do every single day for free, you can now earn a few bucks. Nothing beats money you don’t have to do anything for in my opinion.
  2. Stock: You earn shares of stock in the company based on how many hours you and the members you refer browse the Internet. These can then be turned in for cold hard cash.
  3. Referrals: Just like an affiliate program, you earn money from all the people you sign up as well as the people they sign up. I did a calculation and if you sign up 10 people, those people sign up 10 more each, and everyone surfs the web for just 5 hours per month
  4. Sharing Revenue: If a member of Agloco buys something from one of Agloco’s sponsors, you also get a share of that.

The greatest concept of this new money-making opportunity is that you literally have to do nothing (besides install the viewbar) to make money. How much money depends on if you want to put more work into it.

Since the maximum amount of hours 1 person can have is 5 per month that they count, it’s important to refer people so that you receive their hours as well. For every 5 people you sign up, you can actually double your income! Who knows, maybe you’ll sign someone up who knows a lot of people and within a few months you can have thousands of referred members!

It’s free to join, you can uninstall the viewbar at any time, you can make a few extra bucks a month for doing nothing, it only takes about 1.5 minutes to sign up, and there is virtually no risk involved. Even if for some reason the company goes bankrupt, it’s not like you lost anything.

Since they are still in beta mode, the viewbar won’t be available for another few days. They are releasing 50,000 viewbars per day until each pre-release member has been taken care of. So sign up today and get the viewbar as soon as possible.

I strongly encourage you to take a look at the Agloco website and sign up. Although a small step, this can be the first step you take towards increasing your financial well-being and achieving your perfect life.

One small step can lead to many great things,

Jeremy
